NPIRS Information

The National Pesticide Information Retrieval System (NPIRS) is a collection of pesticide-related databases available by subscription. Many subscribers use NPIRS to assist in registering pesticides and to develop marketing strategies based on currently registered products or pending registrations. Others use NPIRS for pesticide registration information and to identify products currently registered in states.

NPIRS is comprised of three major databases including the Pesticide Document Management System (PDMS), Federal Product and State Product. The Federal Product database contains information pertaining to all federally active, cancelled, and transferred products and searches are initiated by selecting one of the available search options. State Product searches are initiated by selecting a specific state first before selecting additional search options. All Site of Application and Pest to be Controlled information is derived from the federal master label.

The PDMS database was first developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP) and used as their primary tool for managing the large volume of documents submitted to them, primarily in support of product registrations. Document information includes a master record identifier (MRID), trade secret status, submitter and laboratory information, chemistry and subject indexing, guidelines, author, and related MRID information.

Data Sources: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP) and U.S. states and territories who voluntarily provide their state registration data.

Update Frequency: PDMS and Federal Product are updated weekly. State Product is updated as frequently as a state sends their registration data to NPIRS, generally daily, weekly or monthly.

Unique Features: Many of the databases have the ability to interact with other databases while maintaining search results. For example, search results from Federal Product can be carried forward into PDMS for the purpose of identifying corresponding studies. These same results from Federal Product can be carried forward into State Product to identify corresponding state registrations.

Information NOT available in NPIRS: Inert ingredients; dilution rates; re-entry times; exposure treatments; sales data; specific formulation data; application rates; endangered species information; repeat application or rotation data; establishment numbers.
